LMS District English Carnival For Primary Schools 2011

The Larut Matang & Selama English Carnival for Primary Schools was held organised by the LMS District Education Office at SK ( P ) Treacher Methodist, SK Klian Pauh and SK King Edward V11 ( 2 ). Each of the 6 zones from Taiping, Kamunting, Trong, Simpang, Selama and Batu Kurau sent participants for each competition. The Level 2 Spelling Competition was held in SK Klian Pauh and SK Selama was given the privilege to organise this event. Both the Level 2 Public Speaking and Story-Telling Competitions were held in SK King Edward V11 (2 ) . The Choral Speaking and Action Song Competitions and the official closing ceremony were held at the main venue, SK (P) Treacher Methodist.

The English Carnival at district level was a great success and it is hoped that the strong message to love and learn English had been sent to all.

30 participants competed in the oral Spelling Competition and five finalists were declared winners. However, it is still unknown the number of participants for the state level competition . Congratulations to SK Selama as its best participant, Mohd Khairul Ikhwan Fadzizul emerged as the best speller or district champ. The panel of judges had a hard time preparing the list of words for the kids.

Congratulations to SK Selama too for being the runner-up in the Choral Speaking Competition . It was like a dream come true these wonderful boys and girls just like their script entitled, " Go After Your Dreams". It was the best achievement so far after many years of participation. Yes, SK Selama may even be the district champ . It's not impossible!

Well, as for the Action Song Competition, SK Selama was announced as the third prize winner to some disappointment. However, it's excellent and entertaining performance of, "Save Our Earth" received praises from the crowd. Well done girls and for sure SK Selama will return next year with much better performance. Credit goes to Pn Siti Khairunnisa who had put in much effort in this production. We do appreciate the cooperation of other teachers as well for without them we wouldn't have done so well especially in the preparation of the costumes.

In the Story-Telling Competition, Selama Zone wasn't that lucky. However, congratulations to Alya Md Zamin from SK Sg Dendang who won the third prize in the Public Story Competition.

Anyway, the participants from SK Selama enjoyed their visit to the Taiping Zoo as usual. If not for the pouring rain, it would have been more fun.

Selama Zone English Carnival 2011

The Selama Zone English Carnival was held on 20 April 2011 in SK Selama. Being the grandest carnival ever organised by the Selama English Panel , it attracted the participation of almost all 20 primary schools here.

The competitions that were organised were Level 2 Story-Telling Competition, Level 2 Public Speaking Competition, Level 2 Spelling Competition and Level 1 Action Song Competition. The SK Selama Choral Speaking team presented , "Go After Your Dreams" and represented Selama Zone at the Larut Matang & Selama District competition.

The whole staff of SK Selama helped the organising committee to run this carnival successfully. Thanks to the SK Selama staff who did much of the preparation. Luckily, the new stage was ready in time for the carnival.

Shortly after registration and breakfast, the competitions started. The Spelling Competition was held in the largest classroom on the top floor of the old building. Thanks to Mdm Cheang Poh Lin and her team who ran the competition well . It was in written form and words were tough as most of them were taken from the Knowledge Discovery Magazine.

At the same time, the Story-Telling Competition was held in the big hall . Participants performed their best in front of the judges. Some were dressed in colourful and appropriate costumes depicting the main character of their stories. The judges chose the best participant who had performed very well in these aspects; pronunciation, grammar, fluency and creativity.

Everyone was impatient for the Action Song teams to perform. There were 5 teams, the best participation at this level . Teams from S.J.K. (T ) Jln Sir Chulan, S.K. (RTBK) Pondok Tanjong, SK Sultan Idris 11, S.K. Sri Selama and S.K. Selama. All the performances were entertaining and though some schools had participated for the first time, it was great effort.

The Public Speaking Competition which was held in the Media Room in the new block drew participation of 9 schools. Thumbs up for all the participants who tried their best to perform. The impromptu session truly tested them on their oratory skills, their knowledge and usage of correct grammar.

Congratulations to all the winners and to those who did not perform that well , it's fine. At least, they have gained new experience and learned from their mistakes. All the best and hope to have a better carnival next year.

Here are the results. The Champ for the Action Song Competition was SK Selama which drew praises and applause for it's wonderful lively performance, creativity and theme , "Save Our Earth". The runner-up was SJK(T) Jln Sir Chulan.

The Public Speaking Competition was won by Nur Aiman Amreel Abdul Rauf from SK Selama. Runner - up, Alya Md Zamin from SK Sg Dendang too had a chance to participate at the district level competition.

In the Story-telling Competition, Nur Faiza from SK Sg Si Puteh emerged as the champ, followed by runner-up, Nur Syazana Sulaiman from SK Sri Selama.

Finally, 5 top winners for the Spelling Competition were chosen. The champ was Md Naufal and runner-up, Khairul Ikhwan Fadzizul from SK Selama. The other 3 participants too participated at the district level competition.

The organisers would like to thank the panel of judges for carrying out their duty well to pick the best participants to represent Selama at the district level carnival.

Thanks to PKG Selama for doing the video taping and I hope that the CD could be produced as fast as possible. It would be great to watch the carnival on video. Thanks to Puan Noraini who did a wonderful slide show which I will hope to publish in this blog.

Thanks and appreciation to all heads of schools, teachers, pupils and parents who had given their support and cooperation to make this Selama English Carnival for Primary Schools a great success.

SHERRYZA , OUR EX-PUPIL WAS BACK TO MOTIVATE OUR PUPILS.

Friday, 15 April 2011 - Sherryza Bt Abdul Hadi, our ex-pupil ( Year 6 1990 ) returned to visit her old primary school she had left 21 years ago. Pn Sherryza or Sherry as her friends call her is a secondary school graduate English teacher in SMK Bukit Katil, Malacca. For a mother of a four-year old son,she still looks young and sweet .Pn Sherryza was excited to visit her old school as she had seen photos and read about the news of the school events from our school portal http://www.skselama.net/v7 and SK Selama Jalan Menteri Group @ Facebook or Madam Oon's Facebook .

The English Language Panel and school administration welcome ex-pupils who wish to contribute to the school in creative ways or monetary as well. The Alumni of SK Selama will be organising programmes involving ex-pupils in helping the school . It is hoped by meeting the pupils personally, they would be motivated to learn English. Perhaps, they could understand how a small girl like Sherry had grown into a beautiful lady, an English teacher and also a writer of short stories and articles for the CELIK magazine. As she was walking around the compound many approached her and asked,"Cikgu, dulu belajar di sinikah?" Sherry said it was so touching, very nostalgic as she recalled her childhood days and those happy times playing together with schoolmates. How she wished she could turn back the clock.

Sherry related how she loved to learn English and the English activities organized by the English teachers of SK Selama like Story-Telling Competitions, English Grammar Quiz, Sketch Competitions etc. These activities had motivated her to read a lot of English story books and still is a loyal user of the English dictionary. She would search for the meanings of the difficult words and jot them down in her vocabulary book. Madam Oon used to be strict and in those days, pupils were more obedient than the ones at present. Why is this so?

Pn Sherry scored As for English from UPSR and all government exams and furthered her studies in the University. She is planning on pursuing her Phd (Masters ) degree and we wish her all the best. She has been using her love, interest, talent and skills in writing to produce articles in English and her new book which is in Bahasa Malaysia will be launched soon. She loves linguistics she said.

Pn Sherryza who returned to Selama with her family expressed her joy to return to her alma mater to see much development . Sherry's father was the ASP ( Assistant Superintendant of Police ) in Selama before. In those days Sherry talked about the lack of facilities and the old buildings they had to study in. Classes were warm but yet she was with smiles as she was lucky to have been taught by lovely dedicated teachers here. So, she reminded the pupils to appreciate what they have now with the advancement of ICT, wireless connections , equipped computer lab and a new building. They are indeed very lucky.

All the children have to do is to develop the love and interest in learning and improving their English, be brave to speak even if one is being laughed at. Just like what Sherry did before. The more her friends laughed at her for speaking like 'orang putih', she will speak more.

The SK Selama Choral Speaking team immediately were called to give a special presentation especially for Sherryza. She was impressed and even touched them up by offering some useful tips. Yeah, just a little more facial expression will make it perfect. Well, try a little harder boys and girls. SK Selama will grab opportunities to participate in English competitions such as "Spell-It-Right" and Knowledge Discovery Spelling Competition.

Yeah, sometimes we have to live out of the nutshell as it is 2011 now and there has to be a lot of positive changes. Learning English, Mandarin , Arab Language or others gives a person extra points. From the survey done recently, it was found that Malaysian university graduates attending interviews have poor English Language proficiency. Many can't speak English though they may have a string of As. Big successful international and national companies prefer employing job-seekers who are able to speak English well to those who can't. Therefore, pupils should no longer waste time and still refuse to study hard or read more English books. In the end , they themselves stand to lose.

ENGLISH IS AN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE.
IT IS USED WORLD-WIDE OR GLOBALLY.
ENGLISH IS THE MEDIA OF COMMUNICATION IN BUSINESS, EDUCATION, RESEARCH,TOURISM etc.
LEARNING ENGLISH IS FUN AND INTERESTING.
ONE WHO SPEAKS ENGLISH WELL USUALLY WRITEs WELL.
CONSTANT PRACTICE IN SPEAKING ENGLISH MAKES IT PERFECT.
LEARNING AND MASTERING ENGLISH EQUIPS YOU FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE.
TO LOVE, LEARN AND ENJOY SPEAKING ENGLISH TOGETHER IS WONDERFUL.

SK SELAMA ENGLISH LANGUAGE CAMPAIGN 2011

The SK Selama English Language Campaign 2011 will be officially launched during the closing ceremony of the Selama Zone English Language Carnival for Primary Schools which will be held on 20 April 2011.

For the start , 53 pupils were selected and had been training hard to represent S.K. Selama in 5 events. We are proud to say we have been representing Selama Zone in Choral Speaking for many years and it is the most interesting event. As usual these excited kids will have fun in the Taiping Zoo as well after the competition is over. Our Choral Speaking Team is made up of Year 5 and 6 pupils. Come on , boys and girls, you can do it! Do your best , beat the rest! Special thanks to Mdm Cheang who has been training them really hard despite the limited time. I hope to produce a more creative script and get the team prepared much earlier next year. It's going to motivational to the kids.

We are participating in Story-Telling Level 2 Competition and the Public Speaking Level 2 too. These two competitions are divided into Section A ( prepared ) and B ( impromptu ) .

The most colourful and entertaining event of course is the Action Song Competition.
This year SK Selama has prepared a very special presentation sending across a serious message to everyone. Credit goes to Pn Siti Khairunnisa as with her talent in music and her creativity she has managed to produce such a wonderful presentation. To Pn Khananun Hana , Pn Faizah and Pn Aini thanks for all the effort.
I am confident, our kids will not let us down. It will be the best presentation for all. By the way, we have been third prize winners for two consecutive years 2008 and 2009. So like I said , do your best and beat the rest, girls!

We also have trained Farhana to represent us in Story-Telling and she can speak English well too. By the way, her mum was my pupil before. Good Luck to you my 'cucu'. To Pn Shahidah , thanks for helping to help train her and prepare her costume. I've been visiting her at her home in the afternoons and am glad her mum, Faridah , a teacher too has been helping to train her daughter too. Well, we wish her good luck .

Next, Nor Aiman Amreel Abdul Rauf will stand tall on that day as the Head Prefect he will do his best and try to be the best speaker for the Public Speaking Competition. We all will support you , just do your best. Do us all proud.

Not forgetting, our 3 Spelling Competition spellers. As it is in written form we can't witness the fun. But the 5 winners will have to represent Selama Zone at the LMS District Level Spelling Competition which will be held in SK Klian Pauh on 26 April. Good luck to you all. Well, these three pupils love reading and spelling very much. It is through reading that one can increase one's knowledge and vocabulary.

Special thanks to our headmistress, Pn Hjh Ashah Bt Arshad and Senior Assistant, Pn Hjh NorHaizan Bt Mahussin also an English teacher for both have been the supporting force behind the English Panel. As the Head of the English Panel, I will always try to do my best though truly a very busy person in and out of school, all that need to be done , will be done with cooperation from all parties.

To the strong work force of English teachers and non-English teachers and staff as well, I would like to express my appreciation and special thanks to all.

After the carnival, the English teachers will carry out more fun activities in their classrooms and competitions will be held from time to time. To start them young, we have planned to organize English Fun Camp too. We will announce to all soon about these activities.

To ALL SK SELAMA PUPILS, ENJOY LEARNING ENGLISH AND SPEAK ENGLISH CONFIDENTLY.

SK SELAMA GET GEARED UP FOR THE ENGLISH CARNIVAL 2011

My Dear English Teachers And Pupils of SK Selama, here are some words of encouragement from me, the Chairman of the English Panel of our school.

The English Carnival will be organised at the Selama Zone Level first and Larut Matang Selama District Level. The campaign begins and all English teachers must get geared up by helping to prepare our school representatives for the all the five events. It has to be considered a serious matter and there is no time to waste. No time to at all to point fingers at one another but just get to work at it. Success and victories all depend on joint effort and full co-operation from trainers, participants, parents and supporters.

I hope to see the true spirit of participation which is the most important. Being able to present a story, a speech, spell words, sing and dance either alone or in a group like in Choral Speaking , is already an achievement. To improve in one's English one has to try to speak the language confidently . Where there's a will, there's a way . Constant practice makes it perfect.

Am trying my best to write scripts for the various competitions our SK Selama pupils are going to participate. Hopefully the selected pupils will start practising very soon. The contribution of time and effort from the English teachers is appreciated with thanks.

I will call for an urgent meeting soon on this matter.

Mdm Oon Lay Wah
Chairman of SK Selama English Panel

58 Noteworthy Resolutions For 2011!

58 Noteworthy Resolutions For 2011!

THE IMPORTANCE OF ENGLISH

English is one of the most important languages in the world. It can even be said o be the single most important language. Yes, other languages are important too, but not for the same reasons as English is important. English is important because it is, maybe, the only language that truly links the whole world together. If not for English, the whole world may not be as united as it is today. The other languages may be important for their local values and culture.

English can be used as a language in any part of the world. This is because at least a few people in each locality would know the language. Though these people might not have the same accent as others, the language at least will be understandable. There are various reasons for the importance of English language. They are listed below.

1. Travel: When a person travels to another part of the world either for the sake of business or even as a tourist, the languages may differ. In these conditions, English is the language that helps people to deal with the situation. It is like a universal language.

2. Same country: In countries like India, where the land is so vast with people of various cultures live, the languages of each part of the country also differ. Under the circumstances, English can be the only link as people in each place will not be able to learn all the other languages to communicate with the people. English bridges this gap and connects the people.

3. Education / Studies: The presence of English as a universal language assumes importance in the fact that more and more people leave their countries not only for the sake of business and pleasure, but also for studying. Education has increased the role of English. People who go to another country to study can only have English as their medium of study. This is because the individual will not be able to learn a subject in the local language of the country. This again reinforces the fact that English language is very important.

4. Correspondence: All correspondences between offices in different countries and also between political leaders of various countries is in English. This linking factor also tells of the importance of English language.

5. Internet: In spite of the growth of Internet in various languages, English is the mainstay of the Internet users. This is the language in which most of the information and websites are available. It is very difficult to translate each and every relevant webpage into the language of various countries. With Internet becoming very important in E commerce and also in education, English language is bound to grow. Thus the importance of English as a language is emphasized.

The future of English as a language is very secure. In this era of consolidation and trying to unify various aspects of life, it will not be long before English can be made as a single language of the world like the single currency and the union of various nations.

ENGLISH ENVIRONMENT

WELCOME 2011 and all teachers and pupils are geared up for the learning and teaching process. Whatever, activities are conducted, by the end of the day, the pupils must stand to gain. With much from their own effort and a little pushing from teachers and parents pupils should be able to speak fluently , read and write in English correctly.
We teachers, would try our best but as I mentioned the motivation drive must come from within each pupil.
